Can You Vape on Trains, at Train Stations, and on Platforms?

Jan. 28, 2026 • 4 min read

Navigating vaping regulations while travelling can seem complicated, especially if you’re travelling between different Canadian provinces and territories, which govern vaping differently.

Understanding and adhering to Canadian vaping laws is essential when travelling. This guide shares the information you need about vaping restrictions on trains, in train stations, and on platforms across Canada so you can vape responsibly.

The use of vaping devices is prohibited inside stations and other VIA Rail Canada establishments1. That means you cannot vape in train stations served by VIA Rail in Canada, including inside the buildings or on the station platforms.

To find a place to vape when you’re travelling through train stations, ask station staff or go to an information desk for advice on the nearest place you can vape. You may need to walk a distance away from the entrance to the train station to vape legally outside.

Vaping is not allowed on trains in Canada. Major train operators like VIA Rail have strict policies prohibiting vaping anywhere on their trains or within station premises1.

If you’re travelling with a different train operator, check their policies for specific guidance.

Long-distance train routes may occasionally include scheduled stops where passengers can temporarily exit the train to vape or use tobacco products. On VIA Rail services, the following routes have stops where vaping is permitted:

·      Montreal to Halifax (the Ocean) – stops for vapers include Ste-Foy, Campbellton and Moncton.

·      Toronto to Vancouver (the Canadian) – passengers can get off the train and vape during stops at Capreol, Hornepayne, Sioux Lookout, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Jasper and Kamloops stations.

·      Winnipeg to Churchill – those who wish to vape can do so during stops at The Pas, Thompson and Gillam stations(1).

If you’re travelling on any of these routes, make sure you follow the regulations regarding vape stops, and remember that trains only stop for a short time. Ask a member of the train staff if you aren’t sure.

Train companies have reasons for maintaining vaping laws, including banning vaping on trains, inside their stations, and on platforms.

For example, VIA Rail bans vaping to provide passengers and employees with a respectful and safe environment(1). Disregarding the rules can lead to transportation being refused. Police may also be asked to intervene, and offenders may be prosecuted1.

Always follow the rules to avoid the consequences of vaping in a restricted area, and speak to a member of the train or station staff if you are unsure.

Canadian vaping regulations encompass age restrictions for buying vapes, nicotine concentration limits, labelling and advertising laws, and rules about vaping in indoor public places.
