Can You Vape on The Bus and At Bus Stations?

Jan. 10, 2026 • 4 min read

It’s important to be aware of where you can vape to make sure you use your vaping device responsibly and avoid potential penalties. In this guide, we share what you need to know about the regulations surrounding vaping on buses and at bus stations in Canada.

You cannot vape on buses in Canada1,2. Some bus stations may have designated outdoor areas where vaping is allowed. Knowing the rules can help ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Vaping on buses is illegal in Canada. That means if you vape on a bus, you could face consequences, like fines or penalties. Different transport providers may have different rules about where you can vape nearby and various penalties for breaking the rules.

For example, Grand River Transit, operating in Ontario, does not permit vaping on vehicles, in bus shelters, on platforms, or on any GRT property outside of designated smoking areas. Violators are subject to removal from the property and/or a maximum fine of $20003.

In British Columbia, the Tobacco and Vapour Products Control Act prohibits vaping in public buses4.

It is apparent that the use of e-cigarettes may interfere with the comfort and convenience of other transit riders5.

Vaping is banned on buses, including out of bus windows. This is prohibited and is a violation of the rules when travelling by bus. It’s important to respect these rules to avoid any penalties and ensure a smooth journey.

In Canada, vaping is banned in indoor public areas, which includes bus stations and other transport stations.

In Quebec, vaping in public places is prohibited in bus shelters and within a 9-metre radius of every door and window that opens unless the door or window opens onto a municipal sidewalk6.

Look for signs for vaping and smoking areas, ask a member of the bus station staff, or visit an information point.

The Canadian government has regulations regarding vaping and tobacco products, which are applicable to all provinces and territories. These include age restrictions, nicotine strength limits, and packaging and advertising laws.
