Can You Vape in Hotels?
Jan. 28, 2026 • 4 min read
In this guide, we explore the regulations around vaping in hotel rooms in Canada. Understanding where you can and can’t vape is an important part of being a responsible vaper, and knowing the rules upfront can help you avoid any potential penalties.
Policies can differ between hotels, so always check with staff if you aren’t sure or if you haven’t seen any specific guidance around vaping.
Vaping in hotel rooms in Canada depends on the regulations of the province and whether the establishment has specific rooms for smoking or vaping.
Hotels that do have rooms for vaping and smoking may have these fully enclosed and separated from non-smoking areas. For example, in Ontario, the only places you can vape in hotels, motels and inns are in fully enclosed guest rooms that the management has designated for smoking or vaping. Only registered guests and their invited guests can smoke or vape in these rooms. Smoking or vaping is not allowed on or around playgrounds at hotels, motels and inns(1).
Vaping in hotel rooms without permission can have consequences. You might be issued with a fine or cleaning fee for vaping in a non-designated area. If other guests complain, this can cause additional issues for hotel management.
It’s best to follow the hotel’s vaping policies to avoid any potential problems. If you aren’t sure about the hotel’s policies around vaping, ask a member of staff.

Canadian hotels might have smoke detectors that can also detect vapour from vaping devices. Whether your hotel can detect vaping or not, always follow vaping policies and don’t attempt to vape in a prohibited area.
Some hotels may have designated smoking and vaping areas. Look for signs indicating the nearest place you can vape, or ask hotel staff to point out the closest location.
Some hotels and hotel chains may have vape-friendly rooms.(2) These rooms may have balcony areas or other amenities to make vaping more convenient.
If you can’t find a suitable hotel with a vape-friendly room, alternative options like apartment rentals or independent hotels may have more flexible policies. However, always check with the property owner before vaping in a rented space.
