How to Clean a Vape Coil

Quick answer

Most consumer vape coils (pre-built coil heads in pod systems and sub-ohm tanks) cannot be effectively cleaned once the cotton wick is gunked or charred — replacement is the correct action. However, a coil that is lightly residued but not burnt can be rinsed in warm water to partially extend use. Rebuildable coil builds (RBA/RDA/RTA) can be dry-burned and rinsed effectively. Closed-system pod coils (as in Vuse and similar devices) are not cleanable and must be replaced with a new pod.

Understanding coil types and cleanability

Method 1: rinsing a pre-built coil head (limited effectiveness)

This method applies to replaceable coil heads used in open-system pod devices and sub-ohm tanks. It can restore partial performance on a coil that is lightly gunked but not fully burnt. It will not restore a charred cotton wick.
 

Steps:
 

  1. Remove the coil head from the tank or pod. Discard any remaining e-liquid from the tank.
  2. Hold the coil head under a gentle stream of warm (not hot) tap water. Allow water to flow through the coil in both directions — in through the coil base and out through the top, then reversed.
  3. Gently blow through the coil base to expel excess water. You should see water droplets exit the top of the coil.
  4. Place the coil head upright on a paper towel and allow it to air-dry at room temperature for a minimum of 24 hours. Do not use heat to accelerate drying.
  5. Once fully dry, reinstall and prime with e-liquid before use. Take a few short puffs at low wattage before returning to normal wattage.
     

Expected outcome
 

Rinsing with water can remove some residual e-liquid flavour cross-contamination and lightly dissolve early-stage sweetener buildup. It does not restore a fully gunked or charred coil. If the burnt taste persists after rinsing and full drying, replace the coil.
 

Method 2: dry burning rebuildable coils (RBA/RDA/RTA only)
 

This method is only applicable to rebuildable atomizers where the adult nicotine consumer has installed their own coil wire and cotton. It should not be attempted on pre-built coil heads with integrated cotton wicks, as it will char the cotton immediately.
 

  1. Remove the cotton wicking material from the coil completely. Do not fire the coil with cotton installed.
  2. Pulse the fire button in short bursts (1–2 seconds at a time) at a low wattage setting. The coil wire will glow orange as residue burns off. Allow the coil to cool between pulses.
  3. While the coil is still warm (not glowing), brush it gently with a coil-cleaning brush or a clean, dry toothbrush to dislodge ash residue.
  4. Rinse the coil under warm running water while it is still warm. Steam and running water remove loosened residue.
  5. Allow the device/atomizer to dry completely. Re-wick with fresh cotton before use.
     

Safety note:
 

Dry burning should only be performed with the device on a stable, non-flammable surface. Never dry burn a coil that still has cotton in it. Do not breathe the fumes produced during dry burning — perform this step in a well-ventilated area.
 

Cleaning the pod or tank body (separate from the coil)
 

The pod or tank housing (the e-liquid reservoir, excluding the coil) can and should be cleaned when switching flavours or when residue builds up.

Steps:
 

  1. Empty any remaining e-liquid completely.
  2. Rinse the interior with warm water, swirling to dislodge residue.
  3. For stubborn flavour residue, a brief rinse with unflavoured, plain PG or a vodka rinse (high-proof ethanol) can help, followed by a water rinse.
  4. Allow to air-dry fully (12–24 hours) before refilling.
  5. Do not submerge the entire pod device — only the removable tank/pod body should contact water.
     

What you cannot fix by cleaning
 

  • Charred cotton (burnt wick): permanently damaged; replacement is the only remedy.
  • Corroded or broken coil wire: replacement required.
  • Cracked or deformed pod or tank body: replace the component.
  • Blocked airflow inside a closed-system pod: replace the pod.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pre-built coil heads can be rinsed with water for marginal recovery from light gunking. Fully gunked or charred coils cannot be restored by cleaning. Rebuildable coils can be dry-burned and rinsed effectively. Closed-system pod coils cannot be cleaned — replace the pod.

Allow a minimum of 24 hours of air-drying at room temperature before reinstalling and priming a rinsed coil. Any remaining moisture in the coil at time of use can cause spitting or reduced performance.

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is sometimes used to clean tank exteriors and connection contacts, but is not recommended for cleaning coil heads or cotton due to residue retention risk. If IPA is used on tank components, rinse thoroughly with water and allow full drying before use.

The cotton wick is charred and cannot be restored by rinsing. A persistent burnt taste after cleaning means the coil needs to be replaced.

Vuse uses integrated closed-system pods where the coil and e-liquid reservoir are sealed units. The pod itself cannot be cleaned or refilled. Replace with a new Vuse pod when performance declines.
