10 Things to Avoid When Vaping
May 6, 2026 • 4 min read
Whether you're new to vaping or an experienced adult nicotine consumer, this guide covers 10 of the most common vaping pitfalls adult nicotine consumers can make, from device and e-liquid errors to technique and etiquette.
- Buying a low-quality vape
- Using the wrong battery
- Buying low-quality e-liquid
- Making your own e-liquid
- Underfilling the tank
- Choosing the wrong nicotine strength
- Not looking after the coil
- Not cleaning your vape
- Chain vaping
- Ignoring vaping etiquette
The vaping market can include low-quality and counterfeit devices that may pose real risks. According to Health Canada, vaping devices consist of a battery, mouthpiece, heating element (coil and wick), and a liquid chamber, and each component must meet safety standards to function reliably.1
Always keep in mind that poorly made devices may be built from substandard materials, lack safety features, and expose users to unapproved ingredients or malfunctioning parts. You can protect yourself by purchasing from a trusted, reputable brand that complies with Canadian regulatory requirements.
Vaping devices use lithium-ion batteries to power the heating element and produce vapour. Health Canada advises that lithium-ion batteries can overheat, leak, burst, or catch fire if not used, stored, or charged safely.2
If you use an open-system device, always ensure your battery matches the manufacturer's specifications – using the wrong battery size or type can create a safety risk. For further guidance on common battery problems and how to address them, see our vape battery troubleshooting guide.
Products from unverified sources may use inferior ingredients, have inconsistent nicotine levels, or contain contaminants that affect both taste and safety.
Avoid this by only purchasing e-liquids from reputable brands that comply with Health Canada’s vaping product regulations and use quality-controlled manufacturing processes.
Since July 2021, Health Canada's Nicotine Concentration in Vaping Products Regulations set a maximum allowable nicotine concentration for vaping substances sold in Canada.3 Homemade blends have no such controls, meaning you may not be able to reliably verify nicotine strength, flavour consistency, or the absence of contaminants.
An underfilled tank may mean the wicking material cannot stay fully saturated. This can lead to dry hits, a burnt taste, and premature coil damage, all of which may shorten your device’s lifespan. If you have a refillable vape, always fill your tank to the recommended level and check it regularly.
Health Canada states that nicotine is an addictive substance and that the level of nicotine in vaping liquids can vary widely.4
The right strength depends on your personal preferences, your history with nicotine, and the type of device you use. Taking time to consider these factors can help you avoid overuse and find a level suited to your expectations.
For open-system vapers, if the coil wears out or burns, this may affect flavour, reduce vapour production, and leave residues in your device.
When installing a new coil, always prime it by saturating the wicking material with e-liquid before your first puff – skipping this step may lead to dry hits and shorten the coil’s lifespan.
For a full breakdown of how coils work and when to replace them, read our guide to understanding vape coils.
A lack of regular cleaning can cause residue build-up, reduced flavour quality, and a potentially clogged mouthpiece. In tank-style devices, uncleaned components can cause e-liquid flavours to mix and become compromised. Regular cleaning also gives you the opportunity to spot any damaged or broken parts before they become a bigger issue.
For step-by-step guidance on keeping your device in good condition, see our guide to properly cleaning a vaping device.
Chain vaping (taking rapid, consecutive puffs without pausing) does not give the coil sufficient time to re-saturate with e-liquid. The wicking material, which should stay soaked to deliver e-liquid to the coil, dries out under continuous heat.1 This can cause flooded coils, overheating, device leaks, and a burnt taste, while also potentially shortening your coil's lifespan.
Taking moderate, controlled puffs with short breaks in between may help you get the most out of your device.
Being considerate of others is an important part of responsible vaping. Ignoring etiquette and regulations, like vaping in restricted areas, producing excessive vapour clouds in enclosed spaces, or vaping near people who are uncomfortable, can cause conflict.
Vaping rules vary by province and municipality across Canada.5 Familiarize yourself with the local rules that apply where you live and travel, including using designated areas; respecting those around you; and following social norms.
