Vaping Around Pets: Safety Measures for Pet Owners
If you are an electronic cigarette user, you probably already understand the guidelines about not vaping around children. But what about your four-legged friends?
Although the effects of second-hand vape on animals are not yet fully understood, there are a few things to consider before using your vape or e-cigarette around your pets.
The dangers of vaping around pets
Research shows that passive smoke inhalation can be a risk to pets, including cats, dogs and other animals that share your space (1). But how does second-hand smoke affect your pets' health, if at all?*
There are a few ways that vaping may harm your pets, although research is limited:
- Second-hand vapour inhalation, although not much is known about the effects of second-hand vapour on pets.
- Chewing or swallowing parts, including batteries, plastic parts, and e-liquid pods.
-
Consumption of e-liquid – nicotine is harmful to pets and animals can suffer nicotine poisoning if they eat anything containing nicotine (including vapour and e-liquids), so it is important to keep e-liquids away from them (2, 3).
Tips for vaping safely around pets
With a few considerations, pet owners can vape in a way that avoids any risk of harm to their beloved companions.
Avoid direct exposure – although we don't know as much about the risks of vaping as we do about second-hand smoke in animals, it's a good idea to avoid exposing your pets directly to vapour.
Be mindful of strong flavours and thick vapours – avoid exposing your pets to thick clouds of vapour or strong smells that may make them feel uncomfortable.
Observe your pet's behaviour - if you are vaping near your pet, watch for any signs of discomfort or irritation, such as coughing or sneezing - this may be a sign that they are affected by your vaping.
Ventilate indoor spaces – if you vape in the same room as your pet, make sure the space is ventilated to reduce their exposure to vapour.
Charge and store devices out of reach – ensure your pet cannot reach your vape by charging it out of arm's reach, and store vapes, batteries, e-liquids and charging accessories out of the way and always dispose of vapour properly so that your pets cannot get their paws on them.
In case of emergency
If you have any concerns about your pet's health or know or suspect that they have ingested e-liquid or vaping accessories, contact your vet as soon as possible. When it comes to your pet's health, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
