Smokers who start vaping have a set of common experiences. Whether it’s the excitement of choosing which flavour to try out first, the new experience of being able to vape indoors, or the excitement of discovering a new technology, there is a lot to get to grips with.
Once you’ve decided to start vaping, you’re likely to have a lot of questions. Don’t panic! In order to help, the Vuse blog team present our Beginner’s Guide to Vaping.
Before you start
One of the first things to think about as a beginner vaper is which eLiquid flavour to start with. Many people opt to start with a tobacco flavour.
Buying your first vaping device
If you’re accustomed to cigarettes, vaping can seem more like buying a new piece of technology. Some people are intimidated by the prospect of buying their first device. It can feel like there are a lot of unfamiliar components and terms to deal with, compared to more familiar items like phones or laptops. You could ask friends who have already started vaping, but Vuse also has an informative website and a dedicated number you can call to ask for advice: 0800 1337 350.
Your first few vapes
If you’ve only ever smoked cigarettes up until now, your first few draws on your new device might be a surprise, because you do it in a different way. If you try to do it in a similar way to a cigarette, the effect can feel rather intense in the mouth. Don’t try to swallow the vapour, or draw it into the back of the mouth. Rather, keep it at the front of your mouth and then exhale. To begin with, it feels different but you’ll soon get used to it.
With cigarettes, of course, you just take a quick puff. However, with a vaping device, you can inhale for a lot longer (although you shouldn’t feel that you need to in order to get a similar sense of satisfaction).
Your first day
One of the main ways in which vaping devices differ from cigarettes is that they are battery operated. The first time you go out with your device you may ask yourself: how long will the battery last? Not least because on the first day you’re not yet accustomed to gauging how much battery life you’ve used. You don’t want to find that it runs out of charge whilst you’re on the move, so it’s a good idea to take a portable charger with you, enabling you to use the device wherever you are.
First few days
In the first few days, you’ll start to consider when you want to vape. Many people find that the rhythm of ‘smoking breaks’ still works for them and take breaks in the day. Others prefer to graze, taking occasional vapes throughout the day.
At some point in your first week, you might finish the first batch of eLiquid. If you are using an open system device, like eTank Pro 2, changing the eLiquid is a good opportunity to wash out the tank and wipe it down with a paper towel, especially if you are moving to a new flavour, in order to avoid accidentally mixing the flavours.
After that, it’s time to experiment with different flavours. As well as family and friends, you can use our flavour lab to work out which one is for you.
With some devices, if you notice a slight deterioration in the taste or quality of the vapour you should replace your atomiser. This is much easier than it might sound! By the end of your first month, you will probably find yourself happily settled into a routine. Perhaps you vape in little bursts as you work; perhaps with your friends at the pub to relax at the end of the day.
But after a month, congratulations are in order: it’s safe to say that you have made that transition and you can call yourself a vaper.
