The lithium battery is dismantled, collected, and stored for the process and later separated for the downstream recycler. The downstream processor uses a hydrometallurgical process to recover the main materials from the lithium battery. Some elements such as aluminum casings or copper foils, are separated from the battery, and separately recovered by a smelter.

The device undergoes the first stage of size-reduction where it is broken apart into pieces that can be further processed.

Any material that was not removed at the sorting station proceeds into the second stage of size-reduction: a pulverizer breaks apart the remaining materials. Any pieces from the shredder that were not pure materials are liberated from each other.

The pulverized products pass through a series of magnets that removes any magnetic (ferrous) metals. It then goes through an eddy current separator to separate conductive from non-conductive materials aiming to separate aluminum as a final product. The pure commodity is produced at this stage and material prepared for smelting.

The collected metal is sent to the smelter where it is transformed into raw material for the manufacture of new products.
